Former NRA CEO (1991–2024) — turned the NRA into a culture war institution
Overview
Wayne LaPierre served as the NRA's Executive Vice President and CEO from 1991 to 2023, fundamentally transforming the organization from a sportsmen's group into a culture war institution. His 1994 fundraising letter describing federal agents as "jackbooted thugs" prompted former President George H.W. Bush to publicly tear up his NRA membership card.
LaPierre is most remembered for his post-Sandy Hook press conference eight days after the massacre, where he famously stated "the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun" and called for armed guards in every school. The statement became the defining modern gun lobby position.
He resigned in January 2023 amid a corruption trial in which the New York AG alleged he had diverted millions in NRA funds for personal luxury expenses — private jets, Bahamian yacht trips, custom suits, and payments to family members. A New York jury found him liable on February 23, 2024, resulting in a $4.35M judgment against him.
