Sturm, Ruger & Co.
Publicly traded American firearm manufacturer known for affordable handguns and the Mini-14 rifle
Overview
One of the few publicly traded American firearm companies, Sturm, Ruger was founded in 1949 by Alexander Sturm and William Ruger. Known for producing a wide range of affordable, reliable firearms, Ruger sells approximately 1.7 million guns per year.
As a public company, Ruger faces more scrutiny than private competitors. Activist shareholders have repeatedly attempted to force the company to study the public health impact of its products — attempts the company's management has fought at every annual meeting. The company moved its headquarters to Mayodan, North Carolina on January 1, 2026. Its Prescott, Arizona and Newport, New Hampshire facilities remain major manufacturers of the American Pistol and the 10/22 rifle.
