Overview
Founded by Dudley Brown in 2001, NAGR explicitly positions itself as a more uncompromising alternative to the NRA. Where the NRA occasionally negotiates, NAGR refuses all ground. Its primary function is fundraising — it raises tens of millions through aggressive direct mail and email campaigns warning of imminent gun confiscation.
Critics, including many mainstream gun rights advocates, have called NAGR a "scam PAC" that raises money primarily to raise more money with little legislative impact. Nevertheless, it claims millions of members and has real influence in Republican primary politics by pressuring candidates to take maximally hard-line positions.
